Question about american girls in Italy/what to wear?

I%26#039;m going with my (Catholic) school this summer for two weeks to Italy and Greece. There will basically be about 25 16-17yr old girls and maybe about 10 guys. I was real excitied until the teachers that are going with us are now telling us that we can%26#039;t wear shorts, mini-skirts, sleeveless tops or open-toed shoes! Its not like i dress like a whore, but i want to be able to wear something thats cute and isn%26#039;t too hot. When I talked to them, they were saying that this is all done for our safety and that basically a group of blond American tourist girls will be attacked if we don%26#039;t wear clothes head to toe. they are saying that we don%26#039;t understand mediterraen men and that Italians never wear shorts or tanks...only to the beach.

can you please tell me if this is true, and if not what I can do to convience my teachers otherwise

Question about american girls in Italy/what to wear?
it s absolutely false!

i live in milano (beach is so far), i wear whole summer just shorts, mini shorts, sleeveless tops and open toed shoes and tanks...mediterranean men are not maniacs, they just look at pretty girls, no attack.

if u wear like u said i think everybody ll look at u like if u come from mars

in church you can%26#039;t wear like i told you, it s normal
Reply:hahah thats the funniest thing ever...No that is def. not true!!! I mean italian guys are very flirty but nothing serious. the only time you need to cover up is when your going or visiting a church
Reply:I am assuming that because you are going with a Catholic school then you will be visiting a lot of basilicas. Many of them do not allow you to wear shorts or tanks inside. I didn%26#039;t see anything posted about mini skirts.

Realistically, you will be more comfortable wearing sneakers. The miles that you will walk is unimaginable. The same with skirts, you will just be more comfortable in capri%26#039;s and T-shirts.

I don%26#039;t know how much freedom you will have, but the only time that you should wear a skirt, dress, open toed shoes, etc. is for dinner, which is generally about 9 pm.

If I were you I would pack as if I were going on a hike every single day, and have a few nicer outfits just for dinners.

Have fun! And don%26#039;t worry about what you are going to wear. Worry about having enough time to see all you can and take enough pictures.
Reply:I%26#039;m writing from Italy. To part the dresses in order to visit the churches, dressed as you want, no Italian will attack to you if you will carry shorts or sandals, and then this year will be MUCH warmth here! Good travel! if it passes from Ravenna, write me...

Reply:One of the main attractions in Rome is Vatican City. If intending to visit during summer months (May - Sept), make sure you carry a lite t-shirt and pair of track pants or lite trousers in backpack so you can pull over shorts or vest before entering. Vests and shorts aren%26#039;t considered appropriate attire for entering The Vatican. Just make sure that you have the appropriate clothing for visiting churches and cathedrals. Dress codes are usually very strict %26amp; make sure you find out beforehand if the place you are going to visit has any dress codes to avoid trouble (or getting turned away) when you visit Italy.

(--,)
Reply:As an American living in Rome, all I have to say is make sure you listen to the advice of your teachers. They are not trying to put a crimp in your style, just trying to look out for the safety of the group. While they might be over-exaggerating about Italians never wearing these things, they are not exaggerating about how Italian men act toward women who are showing a bit of skin. It draws lots of comments, the occasional feelup, and in some cases even more difficult problems (rape, kidnapping and selling into prostitution - of course these are extreme and God forbid it happen to your group, but it does happen). Here they really like blonds because most of the women here are dark haired.

Since your class will be visiting churches, most likely, you will also need to adhere to the dress code for visiting them. If you are not wearing something which goes past the knees or which covers your shoulders, you won%26#039;t be able to get into St. Peter%26#039;s and some of the other places you will want to visit (that goes for guys too).

My recommendation, is that you wear short sleeved shirts and bring a light-fabric long sleeve shirt for visiting the holy places. You will need the long sleeve shirt as these places are normally cooler due to the huge ammounts of stone and marbel and limited sunlight. Try to avoid anything skin tight for the above mentioned reasons.

Ask your teachers about those pants that have the zippers in the legs for becoming shorts. The shorts they become are generally long enough not to draw too much attention and you could easily zip the longer parts of the legs back on for visiting churches. My other recommendation would be a nice white skirt that goes past the knees. The white will reflect the sun, and, being a skirt, not be too hot like pants.

I think if you show your teachers that you respect what they have said and are not looking to dress provocatively, then they might be more willing to ease up the restriction.

In any event, you are very lucky to be going on this trip. I hope you have fun and learn a lot.

Do Heely's cause kids to develop physical disabilities?

I have heard of Heelys (most popular brand is made by Heelys - http://www.heelys.com/) being banned in some malls, schools, and playgrounds due to safety concerns related to possible injuries resulting from their use, however, has any research been done about the effect of using Heelys on a child%26#039;s development? The way that a child needs to walk when not %26quot;wheeling%26quot; down the sidewalk is unnatural. Is it possible that by allowing our children to wear these shoes we are contributing to developmental issues by promoting bad posture and possibly physical disabilities as a result of poorly developed bone structure from their walking unnaturally during formative years?

Do Heely%26#039;s cause kids to develop physical disabilities?
Whenever kids have to resort to walking on their tiptoes; which is what they do when the skate part of their shoe is down and enabled, you can always end up developing foot problems. For a different reason, there have been many articles lately about the dangers of %26quot;heelys%26quot;. Kids are injuring themselves by falling down. http://www.abcnews.go.com/Health/Exercis...

Personally, I can%26#039;t stand them, and I especially can%26#039;t stand the parents who act like their children should not follow simple manners while on them.
Reply:Unless they are using them at age 1 they would not cause any problems. That%26#039;s when they learn to walk. It%26#039;s not like a kid is going to forget how to walk just because he/she has heelies. Let%26#039;s be realistic here. Didn%26#039;t you have roller skates when you were little? Can you still walk???

Of course they are banning them in school and malls and such. The kids use them and then they knock stuff over and they could fall too and the schools or malls don%26#039;t want to be sued. Makes perfect sense.

Of course Heelies don%26#039;t change a child%26#039;s developement.
Reply:My kids have Heely%26#039;s and I%26#039;m not worried about them stunting their growth or causing problems with bone structure. My kids have rules to follow

1: Heely%26#039;s are not sneakers, they are roller skates, wear them as such

2: Heely%26#039;s are not to be worn, in the house, in school, in church, in any place of business.

3. Heely%26#039;s are roller skates, you wear skates you wear a helmet and pads.
Reply:they do if the kids ride them like stupid kids!

i was driving yesterday and a girl -probably 12 or 13 - was crossing the street. walk 5 feet, wheel 2 feet, walk 3 feet, wheel 1 foot... all across the 4 lane road.

retarded, just retarded.

i know! they have to walk on thier tiptoes!
Reply:I don%26#039;t think there is anything to worry about. My daughter%26#039;s school does not allow Heelys to be worn during the school day. She leaves the house at 7:15 AM and is home by 3:15 PM (sixth grade). Since she can%26#039;t wear her Heely%26#039;s to school, she is wearing regular sneakers from 6:30 AM until at least 3:30 PM. She goes to karate at 7:15 (barefoot), and gets changed into her pajamas when she gets home. So the most she is wearing her Heelys during the course of a day is 3 hours. And during that period of time, she is also doing her homework and eating, so she is not walking on them. That is not enough time to cause any kind of developmental problem in her posture or anything else.
Reply:I would have thought they banned them because too many kids were bumping into other people or shop displays. I can%26#039;t see how heelies would affect a child%26#039;s development.
Reply:There have been studies stating that walkers (used in infancy and young toddlers) can cause children to not walk properly as a result of the Achilles tendons not fully developing as they should during these years, but I think children of the age who are using these are more developed and less susceptible to physical problems as a result. Most of the kids using these are not using them in place of walking all the time, rather when they catch a few seconds in the hall or mall when an adult is not supervising them.

I am getting an inflatable moonwalk for my kid's birthday party. What footwear is best if it rains?

My son%26#039;s party is in a few days but it looks like it may rain on his birthday. I rented an inflatable moonwalk for him and all of of his friends. Normally the kids bounce around in these in socks, so no one gets a sneaker kick to the head. If it rains that day, should I make everyone keep their shoes on instead? Make them go barefoot? It seems socks would get wet in the yard. What do other parents do for safety?

I am getting an inflatable moonwalk for my kid%26#039;s birthday party. What footwear is best if it rains?
Barefoot would be best.

Socks will get dirty and wet. Shoes can hurt others (kick in the head) and the moonwalk. If it is just light rain, jumping is not a problem.

Kids love going barefoot in these things anyway. You should not get any resistance if you make going barefoot the rule.
Reply:Thanks!

I%26#039;ll tell everyone to remove their shoes and socks at the front door when they arrive. I think it will just be safer and easier if everyone at the party stays in bare feet from the start. Report It

Reply:If it rains hard or if there is lightning, you should shut the moonwalk off (the delivery person will show you how). If it%26#039;s just sprinkling, you can let the kids keep on jumping.

No shoes in the jump - it could damage it. Barefoot is OK, but it could be unsanitary. Best to just let them take their shoes off when they get to the moonwalk, right before going in (and bring some dry socks to change into once they%26#039;re done jumping for the day).
Reply:barefoot would be okay, but not shoes.
Reply:why not dry the unit off and they can still wear socks

no one needs to wear shoes in that unit.

or just cancel the unit if it rains period

as it can get messy depending on how hard a rain comes
Reply:If it rains, I%26#039;d say it%26#039;s too dangerous for any jumping - sneakers, socks or bare feet. Dangerous.
Reply:If there is thunder and lightening, they shouldn%26#039;t be playing outside. If it%26#039;s just light rain, I would let them continue to jump. Buy some slipper socks for each kid to wear-the grips on the bottom will keep them from slipping and sliding or buy cheap socks so they arent ruining their own socks. I think sneakers are too dangerous. Also, with sneakers--if there%26#039;s a rock in the sole of the shoe and it could puncture the moonwalk--EXPENSIVE. You might tell the parents to bring a dry change of clothes so you don%26#039;t have a bunch of wet, muddy kids in your living room. Kids love the rain. They%26#039;ll have a blast.
Reply:In my experiences working with companies who rent out moonwalks...usually if it looks like it may rain or begins to drizzle, they will take it down due to company regulations. It is a hazard for the children to be on there and it is wet. And the wetter the moonwalk gets makes them not be able to put it back up so fast. They have to wait until it dries.
Reply:sneakers only

2 Overnight stays in LA: 21Mar07 and 30Mar07. Staying near LAX. What to do?

Looking to fill some time while in LA for the first time. Need to cab or bus around from LAX. Are there any good bands, concerts or musicals scheduled for either of those two nights? (I enjoy different types of music, from classical, accapella, blues, and rock. Could miss out on hip-hop, jazz or country.)

Also interested in the following: outlet stores for shoes or beach wear, restaurants, museums, rollercoaster park, scrapbook or rubberstamp stores AND places to avoid in regards to safety.

Time to fill: 12pm Mar 21 to 11am Mar 22. AND 4pm Mar 30 to 2pm Mar 31.

Thanks for your time!

2 Overnight stays in LA: 21Mar07 and 30Mar07. Staying near LAX. What to do?
Venice Beach is very close by the airport and is a great place to spend your day. Within walking distance of that is Main Street and Abbot Kinney in Santa Monica/Venice for great shopping and cafes/restaurants. The evening can be spent in the same area or anywhere else in the city, if you rent a car or take a cab. Melrose has great shopping and eating and a wonderful street scene. The list is endless.

Another close by area off the beaten path is Long Beach, which has recently gone a bit more upscale but still has a lot of funky charm to offer. It also has the Queen Mary and the Aquarium of the Pacific. Manhattan Beach and the other nearby beach communities to the south still have the old beach city funky feel to them and have clubs and restaurants to spare.
Reply:You could go to Santa Monica. This has the 3rd street promenade which is a shopping area and great place to people watch. Also in Santa Monica is the Pier which is a small amusement park. Not sure if it will be open that late during this time but might be worth checking out. This is only about 10-15 minutes by car/taxi.

You could also go to Hollywood area, on Sunset is the House of Blues they might have some concert going on. From LAX you can take the FlyAway bus to Union Station and from there take the Metro Red Line. This will get you to Hollywood and if you stay on it to Universal City which has Universal Studios and CityWalk.

The nearest Outlet mall would be the Citadel but that will be quite a ride by Cab and this is an area you would not want to rely on Public Transportation.

A bit farther out is Disneyland in Orange County,

Where can I get help?I need a good car to drive and a babysitter for my kid.?

I got my job in late March this year. My grandmother has been helping by watching my four year old daughter and giving me rides to and from work and the store. But recently doctors noticed a lump in one of her lungs and are now talking about sending her to get radiation over 2 hours away.

I am barely %26quot;getting by%26quot; with what I am currently earning. I have to turn to my family for basic things such as shoes for my daughter. My ex isn%26#039;t helpful at all. I am looking into getting child support, but I know I wouldn%26#039;t get much from him and there are safety concerns if he gets more rights to our daughter.

I do not see any better job openings in my area and I have talked to my boss. She won%26#039;t be able to help me as much as I need. I was hoping that as a single mother and an online college student I may qualify for some kind of assistance. Does anyone know where I should look? I have already contacted Human Services. They weren%26#039;t helpful. I live in North East Texas.

Where can I get help?I need a good car to drive and a babysitter for my kid.?
so you belong to a church ? they are good about helping out :)

What are some other small street bikes besides Rebels, and where can I find them cheap?

I am 5%26#039;2%26quot; in shoes, and have problems reaching the ground on %26quot;average%26quot; sized motorcycles. I have been looking for a Honda Rebel on ebay, craigslist, newspapers, forums, and they are not easy to come by, and when they are available, they are out of my price range. Are there any other small, affordable cycles out there? I know that a lot of Motorcycle Safety courses use these bikes... who owns them? Do they ever sell them? Thanks!

Reply:How about the CB250 Honda, or GZ 250 Suzuki, or Yamaha 250 virago? Or its an off brand, but, a Vento 1400 Thunder (250)?

How about a Buell Blast with the optional cut down seat, should be plenty of those around used?

Reply:1- To control my horse, (but not just for when your mounting it!!!! for whenever you ride or even lead it!!)

2- Yes, bareback riding, it%26#039;s fun!!!

3- Angry

4 - what?! that doesn%26#039;t make sense!! but i would say (if you mean what i think you mean) be very careful going out after it, cos it might either bolt, kick, or back up, and could hurt you, as you wouldnt%26#039; have any control. It%26#039;s always best to go out NEXT to it%26#039;s shoulder, as then you have perfect control

5 - false!

6 - best to leave it alone!

7 - ooo, hard one this.... random guess.. 4 lol! =D

8 - protect your head with a riding hat. If you take a tumble, without a hat on, you could seriously hurt yourself and will probably have to go to hospital, so it%26#039;s best to wear one at all times when riding, even if your just walking around in a sand school.

hope i helped!!! =D
